It was another one of those sleepless nights, nothing but the dying flame of the candle that had been lit earlier to light the earthen room. Its waning light reflected dully in onyx eyes, focused on the ceiling, and as it flickered and died, Sasuke slid from his bed, restless and giving up on sleep entirely just as he did every night he was awake to see the candle's light vanish.
He dressed quickly, leaving on a whim and without a sound, footsteps silent through the maze of passageways as he walked wherever his feet took him, uncaring of where that might be. He'd spent countless night just like this one over the past two and a half years, particularly when Orochimaru was away as he was now. It was those times when there was nothing to ease him into a dreamless sleep, no elixir to force unconsciousness upon him, and nothing to keep his mind from wandering.
The snake had been gone for two days now, not bothering to tell Sasuke where he was going or why, though the Uchiha didn't particularly care. The only thing it really meant to him was less training, and possibly more of it when the sannin returned. All in all, it didn't really matter, because he still wasn't strong enough.
Dragging himself back to the present and out of his thoughts, he found himself a mile or so outside of Orochimaru's lair at the edge of a small cliff, bathed in the light of a waxing crescent moon and the chill night air. He recognized the place as one he ended up rather often on these nights, though he was never sure just why his subconsciousness took him here. Once, it had been a full moon when he'd come to this place, and the ground still showed the scars of his rage at the memories it had brought.
A full moon only ever took him back to that night, tearing old wounds open once again and fueling his hatred just that much more. Even these many sleepless nights were a byproduct of that one half his lifetime ago, just one more thing he could hate Itachi for.
Dark eyes gazed at nothing, the light of the moon not even truly reaching him as he stood there, barely focused in that instant. He would end up back in his room before sunrise even threatened the horizon, but he would never remember just how he got there, just like always, seeing as the path was one only his subconscious knew.
Orochimaru would return in less than three days, he knew, and with him, Kabuto. This would mean a full day's sleep, delivered by the medic-nin's syringe and barely trusted if only for the peaceful oblivion it gave and the knowledge that the snake would never let his soon-to-be vessel be harmed. Even still, he oftentimes wondered if he might just not wake up from it.
He was nearly unaware of his surroundings as his mind drifted from one thing to another, though in the end, his thoughts always ended back at Itachi, the acidic sting of hatred drawing the Sharingan to his eyes at the memories he only retained for the sake of that hatred. If he closed his eyes, he could lose himself to them...

"Aniki! Anikiiiiiiiii!" The thud of little feet running down the hall, soft panting as the small boy caught his breath. "Kaa-san, I can't find Aniki! He promised I could watch him train today!"
"He just left, Sasuke, I'm sure you can catch up to him if you hurry." A gentle smile and an even gentler hand ruffling the boy's hair despite his protests that he wasn't a little kid (even though he was), just before he darted out the door, stumbling a little in frustrated excitement that was perfectly becoming of a seven-year-old.
A distant figure, walking at a leisurely pace toward the training area they kept a secret between themselves.
"Aniki, wait for me!" The figure turned, and as the small boy stumbled and tripped it was like falling straight into the past.

Fallen, red leaves blew across the street as the older boy's features became clear, long black bangs blowing across inky eyes, expressionless, save for a hint of curiousity. He didn't move as Sasuke fell. If one fell, they needed to feel the pain of falling, in order to grow stronger, to not fall again.
He was by Sasuke's side a few seconds later, though. "Sasuke..."

There were tears in the small boy's eyes that he refused to shed --a ninja doesn't cry-- as he looked up at his beloved aniki, tiny pinpricks of blood already welling up along the surface of his skinned knee. Trying to ignore the pain, Sasuke gave a childish, obstinate pout.
"You promised!" he said(whined? complained? accused? He couldn't quite remember), lower lip sticking out as far as he could put it.

Promises. Such fleeting things. A string of pretty words, supposedly infused with meaning. Merely words.
He bowed his head, refusing to meet Sasuke's gaze. It wasn't right to teach someone like him to kill. "My responsibilities to the Hokage must come before family. I'll teach you tomorrow."

The rejection was something the small boy was used to by now, but it still hurt deep inside, scraping far deeper than the insignificant scratches on his knees. Nobody else's rejection could hurt like his aniki's, but all he did was pout more, continuing to fight back tears as he stubbornly got to his feet.
"You got another mission so soon? You said you had this week off and you'd train with me, why can't Hokage-sama get somebody else to do it!"
What hurt the most was that Itachi refused to look at him.

"They don't want anyone else, only me." Itachi stood, and began walking away from Sasuke, hair partially covering the Uchiha crest on his back. "Maybe you'll understand when you grow up."

Sasuke ignored the pain in his knees to run after his brother. "Aniki wait!"
'Just this once...' he thought, wondering for not the first time if Itachi could read minds. 'Just this once put me over them...' Just last year they'd been able to spend so much more time together than now, it wasn't fair how many missions Itachi got. It wasn't fair how they were taking his brother away from him.

Itachi's footsteps slowed, until he stopped, staring at the sky as it darkened with clouds. "The storm is coming." he murmured, as the wind picked up and tried to drown out his voice.
He turned, his eyes suddenly cold, staring through the younger boy. "You should go home, Sasuke." Itachi whispered, as lightning flashed beyond the trees.
