 They are... [Kakashi|Past]

Stay out of this. They are no longer your students..

Iruka could still feel the anger stirring inside of him. Hatake Kakashi, who had failed all his previous students but the current Team 7, had gone too far. Out of the few weeks--since his ex-students had been let go out of graduation--had Kakashi been able to measure their capacity to the fullest?

They are my soldiers.

Naruto was especially different. The exam came too soon for the team, they needed experience. There had to be another way to intervene the predicament Kakashi placed the three in. But how? How could he, an academy instructor, get involved in an event far out of his reach? Even the Hokage had no say. He would have to break the barriers himself.

Kakashi had shocked him more than once. Iruka motioned his right hand to his face. He remained thoughtful, incentive on his goal. He would have to request an appearance at the failure, after all. Hopefully the failure didn't lead to Sakura, Sasuke and mostly importantly Naruto to their deaths.

He couldn’t blame Iruka for saying what he did. He had not seen his students much in their last few missions, he hadn’t seen how they progressed, they needed a leap of some sort, they needed something better than what they were doing now.

Iruka was like an overprotective parent, but if there was one thing they both understood, was that hardship led to development, no one ever learned from something easy.

Or maybe it was he that was being too hard on them. Kakashi shrugged.

It was still them who would decide whether to take the exam or not, he wouldn’t force it on them unless he was sure that they were ready, at least, to make that judgment for themselves. He felt a mild disheartenment that Iruka didn’t trust him enough, but he brushed it off, Iruka didn’t have a say in this anymore. His influence in their lives was all but over except as a bystander. It was harsh, but true.

Kakashi’s face didn’t even change a hair as he glanced easily, almost too easily, from Iruka to the Hokage.

“..See you all at the exams.” He said coolly, waving off a hand easily before turning his back to leave, the applications in his pocket.

He gave one last look to Iruka over his shoulder, no one catching the meeting of his single eye. If he wanted to follow him, he could, he didn’t want to embarrass his comrade further..

“..See you all at the exams.”

Iruka pulled himself out of the foreboding thoughts, wavering eyes shifting to the gaze that drifted back on him. He knew he would draw attention if he spoke up and voiced his thoughts and he would refuse to say more. The fate of the trio lied on their individual choice now. Iruka silently feared Kakashi would pressure his ex-students into participating. He had to know if that was the case.

Kakashi remained a hard character to follow and track down. If he was gone, then he was gone. However, he caught a glance. It wasn't beckoning nor inviting but it did intimidate Iruka to follow after the silver-haired man.

Without being obvious, Iruka's eyes fell down to the applications bunched in Kakashi's pockets. Again, he would intervene to prevent such a dismal event from occurring. When Kakashi moved, he moved, following the man into the hall--away from listening ears. Usually he respected Kakashi, greeted him with a smile, but that retreated. Whenever he wanted to ask about something personal; he got embarrassed--nervous.

"Kakashi.." Iruka spoke up, allowing the door of the room to shut behind him. Still, he was within ear shot of the door. They needed to move further away.

Kakashi closed his eyes as he walked, hands in the pockets of his pants as both senseis migrated down the hallway of the Hokage's meeting house. One right after the other, they went quietly.

When he wanted to retreat, to think about something else, Kakashi did what he typically did. He pulled out his usual book from the opposing vest pocket of the one that held the applications.

Volume 1. He had all ready read that one. A mild frown that was hidden behind the mask instead reflected in his eye as he repocketed the book. Right, he left the other one at home... he reached up a plated glove hand to run it over his silver hair absently.

Kakashi seemed more bothered by the fact that he had left his book at home than the bitter emotion left behind in the previous room..

He turned to Iruka, pressing his back against a nearby door way and crossing his arms. His single black eye gazed at the brunette, not the usual curious gaze that he gave to his comrade, but one that held a heavier aura of seriousness.

Iruka had a fermenting look of nervousness about him, not one that was evident, easy to see, but Kakashi liked to flatter himself thinking he could at least read the other, kinder sensei well enough to know when he was uncomfortable. Kakashi could be apathetic, unbothered by the opinions of others, but with Iruka it was a bit different, he didn't like sparking such negative emotions from the other.

Iruka was possibly the only one in his life that had such an affect on him, but Kakashi would never admit to it, so his apathetic, uncaring nature - this time - had to be forced. He held a facade of stone.

He didn't really want to talk about this, unsure of what else Iruka could add to this controversy other than just agitation. He had made up his mind, stubborn, it would not change.

"Kakashi.."

He unfolded his arms from his chest and placed a flat hand on the door he leaned upon, pressing it to step inside, closing his eyes as he did so. The door led to a deck outside, empty and desolate, it overlooked treetops - it was eerily quiet, not even the wooden wind chimes moved.

"..Iruka," he said his named, as though simply acknowledging him, just testing the syllables for the sake of saying them back. He held the door open for Iruka, to let him walk in front, he raised an eyebrow.

"..I hate being inside,” he said casually, the single black eye lazily looking back over his shoulder at the view, “..Best not to waste the day, eh.”

Change the subject maybe. Or maybe not.

Iruka would usually allowed his eyes to drop out of nervousness, but this time around he had to stand his ground and to show that he, too, he was serious in this predicament. Backs were always shown to Iruka, this he was used to. When Kakashi turned around, he started, head raised fully and his auburn eyes frozen on the other Jounin.

A moment like this didn't seem accurate to Iruka. Usually, Kakashi would give him remorse of emotion. But this time around, the other male was cold. Did he deserve Kakashi's bitter treatment? Yes. Out of all of Kakashi's students, Team 7 was the first to pass. And for that reason, Iruka should have given the Jounin the benefit of the doubt to see what he could not see.

The surprise on Iruka's face started to drain when the door was held open in acknowledgement. He held his seriousness, anger burning away as he walked into the opened deck. Passing by Kakashi, he nodded his head in silent gratitude. One, for letting this conversation happen; two, for holding the door open.

In this scenario, the weather and the day did not matter to him. Naruto, and the his friends were his main worry. "You won't," Iruka already started--straight to the point, "Force them to make the decision, will you?" This time around, Kakashi could look at Iruka's back.

"..." Kakashi did just that, looked at Iruka's back. The ponytail and the stern exterior. So he wasn't going to avoid this subject, wasn't going to end it here. Kakashi sighed, rubbing the back of his neck and looked away, shutting the door behind them. Cut off. Now no one would hear them. Not like that would matter, but..

He didn't look back at Iruka.

"...You grew up teaching them, you of all people should know their potential." He said is blandly, and like Iruka, to the point. That is how he felt about this, that they had potential, to an infinite degree.

Not a Sharingan Eye was needed to see that.

Many more mountains to climb, more blood to be spilled, maybe even some rock bottom falls before the three of them even knew their own power to rise from those falls. They hadn't even taken the first step yet, it was only Kakashi that presented it to them. It would be they themselves that took the initiative and he would be sure that nothing would stand in the way of that, even for failure, he wouldn't allow Iruka to prevent it.

He put his hands in his pockets and closed his eyes, walking to stand beside his friend, facing the same as him. No longer would either of them look at each other's back. This was standing side by side, like how he wanted it to be. Though, even so, Kakashi's will would not bend to Iruka's worries.

"...They have to decide for themselves that individually they are strong enough to do the exam, so that they may be strong as a group," Kakashi shrugged, "Not much I could do in the scheme of that." He looked over at Iruka. His way of saying, assuring that - no, I won't force it on them.

Iruka felt his heart sink. No, he did not know their potentials; he only saw their failures on their strengths. Or rather, he only concerned himself with Naruto--he wasn't intellectually strong enough to be thrown into strenuous tasks. Just because Naruto had matured over time; it didn't mean he was prepared. True, Sakura and Sasuke's strengths would help even out Naruto but it wasn't enough to count on, not to mention it was a burden to throw on two kids as young as them.

On the other hand, Iruka knew that experience made those of the leaf village a true shinobi--he just wished that Naruto would stow away from his ambitions to consider the reality of the situation. Naruto needed to wake up from his dreams and it was a dream no one should take away--that is where Iruka's concerns rested.

Because of the worries stirring in Iruka's head, he barely noted Kakashi's presence--now lingering at his side. Iruka turned his head, a glaze in his eyes. All he could see was the mask covering Kakashi's face, looking at his blind side while a smidgen of the revealed eye turning his way. Quickly, the academy instructor blinked the foggy look away.

There wasn't much to argue now, with the worry of force gone. Still, he remained upset over the nomination in the first place. Why hadn't he felt shaken when the other genin instructors nominated their students? Why? Why had he unfairly placed prejudice on Kakashi just because Naruto was in the same unit?

It had dawned on him that he made a fatal error by doing so. However, he would not let his logic stop him from intervening and consoling the young boy when Naruto met failure. Iruka would be there. "The nomination still bothers me," he admitted, despite the reassurance from his comrade, "Yet I am willing to tolerate it, to see if the potential was worth risking their lives for."

He had admired people like Kakashi--those with a genius personality. But he had learned long ago his strengths were in his deepest interests; those strengths he was meant to flourish. Iruka felt awkward, staring Kakashi down like this, and so accursedly. He lifted his left hand, fore-finger scratching his cheek nervously, gaze drifting to the scenery instead.
